Heather Johnson, CD (CBI) — Secretary, Dir. of Web Development

My name is Heather Johnson, and I am one of the newest members of PDX doulas. I received my birth doula training and certification through Childbirth International. I became interested in pregnancy and childbirth after the birth of my son, and have also started on the path to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife. My family recently moved to the Pacific Northwest from Columbus, OH, and we  are now falling in love with Portland. In my “free time,” I take my kids (ages 5 and 2) for hikes in the Columbia River Gorge and trips to the Oregon Zoo. I also enjoy running and am hoping to compete in some races once I get acclimated to all the changes in elevation that seem to exist here!

I know that the journey of birth can sometimes be unpredictable and mysterious, and a sense of openness, flexibility, and reverence may be required. However, every birth is a unique and amazing experience, and in every case it is a transforming life event and should be honored as such! I know that giving birth can be one of the most challenging things a woman may face, but it is also one of the most fulfilling. As a doula, I do not have an attachment to the outcome or to the choices about labor and birth that the women I work with make. My goal is to support them in their choices and empower them to find their voice in the birth process, as well as to find the inner strength that every laboring woman possesses.
